The older you get, the harder it is to maintain clear and glowing skin. Many people focus on anti-aging creams and moisturizers to preserve their skin, and while that may help, they should also take a look at what they're putting into their bodies. The food you eat can have huge effects on the appearance of your skin. These foods are not only bad for your health, but they can also cause damage to your skin. Here are 15 foods that a certified dietitian said to avoid for youthful-looking skin.

Doughnuts

Aside from the taste, doughnuts offer no benefits. The amount of sugar and grease is guaranteed to wreak havoc on your skin.

Soda

Not only is soda extremely unhealthy, but it will also decrease the elasticity of your skin. One can of Coke contains 39 grams of sugar. Beverages high in sugar can damage the formation of collagen, which will decrease the firmness of your skin.

Fried Foods

Fried foods can make your skin appear puffy. This is caused by a negative effect internally on circulation. It's best to try to avoid fried food since it does a lot more harm to your body than just damage your skin.

Alcohol

Everyone knows that alcohol dehydrates the body, but did you know that it will also suck the moisture out of your skin? Drinking alcohol will cause you to have a washed-out complexion. If you're on the Smart for Life program, you don't have to worry about this because alcohol isn't allowed on the program. For everyone else, make sure to drink water between alcoholic beverages to help counteract the effects and keep you hydrated.

Candy

We all know that candy is pure sugar and probably should be avoided. Eating candy will cause weight gain and will also have negative effects on the appearance of skin. The high amount of processed sugars will cause inflammation.

Salty Snacks

Snacks like chips and dip are very high in sodium. This spike in salt intake will cause water retention and bloating.

Processed Meats

Processed meat contains a lot of fat and sodium. For radiant skin, avoid meats like salami and hot dogs. If you don't want to give up processed meats, try to buy meats with fewer preservatives.

White Bread & Rice

These both have a high glycemic index (GI). This means that when you eat white bread and rice, you'll see major spikes in blood sugar and insulin. There have been recent studies that have found that foods with a high GI cause acne.
